Uncovered: Five Guys
You may have read that I have a certain affinity for another red and white burger joint, which is why I have been very reluctant to try a burger from the new Five Guys that recently opened in my neighborhood.
Five Guys is famous for their simple menu: burgers, fries, dogs. That’s pretty much it. No milkshakes, no chicken, no salads. I was skeptical, yet impressed when I looked at the menu:
Calorie counts clearly available for everyone to see. I was also thrilled to see their 100% beef policy (no fillers or preservatives) and the availability of Sprite Zero!
It’s worth noting that a regular hamburger here actually has TWO beef patties. The “Little Hamburger,” is not, in fact, a kid’s burger. Rather, it is a single-patty burger, and a generously-sized one at that.
Toppings are unlimited, and a regular (“little”) burger will run you 480 calories. Not bad for a succulent American classic. For fries, stick to one order to share (trust me!), because the portion is huge. The entire order is 620 calories, which, split in half, is a manageable number.
So how was the burger? Very tasty. It definitely has that charbroiled taste of a “real” homemade burger from the grill. The fries are excellent as well.
Question of the Day
What are your favorite burger toppings? Red onion, lettuce, and lots of ketchup are a MUST for me!

I like Five Guys! It’s not my favorite burger joint but it’s in my top 5 for sure. I get the little burger too. It’s definitely enough for me! And I skip the fries–they aren’t great and too high in calories (like 1,000?). I like ketchup, mustard, tomato, lettuce, roasted onions and relish. YUM
Definitely Top 5, yes! Hmm…on the menu it says the small order of fries is 620 calories. My husband and I split it, so I figure 300-ish isn’t so bad
I’ve been very curious about Five Guys. Andy has been reluctant to go since I only “let” us get burgers a few times a year. He doesn’t want to “waste” a burger trip… I think I want to check it out!
It is definitely worth the “investment”! Very tasty, and one order of fries will be more than enough for your family.
Just an FYI, but Five Guys was Zagat-rated as second best fries and best burgers in it’s category, competing with In-n-Out and McDonald’s.
Good to know! It’s hard for me to even compare it to In-N-Out or McD’s…I think they all have such distinct flavors.
I don’t think I’ve had a Five Guys burger. If I have, it’s been a very long time. But I do know all about their Cajun fries and they are AWESOME! I love fresh cut fries! So much better than anything from McD’s!
There was a Five Guys that just opened by Adam’s work and he was really impressed too. Not sure if our location has the calorie counts, though, since it’s not yet required by law.
One of my go-to toppings is avocado… oh and pickles of course. I also like adding random stuff on top, like roasted veggies or whatever else I find in the fridge. I like my burgers fun
I make deliverys from Colo. Spgs. to Albuqueque and I eat at Five Guys twice a week, every week! I like every topping on my burger except relish. Even the cashier knows what I want before I ask! Absolute best fries to me!
lol no wonder americans are all so fat.
I love five guys. The charbroiled taste of the burgers are the best, and their fresh cooked fries are choice. I’m in line at five guys now while I’m leaving this message
I LOVE FIVE GUYS!!!!!! THEY GAVE THE BEST BURGERS AROUND!!!! THE FRIES ARE OK… THE AMOUNT OF FRIES THAT THEY GIVE YOU IS REDICULOUS!!! MY DAUGHTER & I SPLIT A REGULAR SIZE FRY AND WHEN WE ARE DONE THERE IS STILL A FULL CUP OF FRIES LEFT OVER (I END UP THROWING THEM AWAY, WAY TOO MUCH)… STILL… I LOVE FIVE GUYS!!!!!!!!!! AWESOME!!! I CANT WAIT FOR THEM TO BUILD A LOCATION CLOSER TO MY HOME, BUT THE DRIVE IS WORTH IT!!!!
I think the burgers, and fries are really good, but the price will keep me from returning. For these prices I expect at table service. I was really disappointed to find that a burger, fries and a large drink would be $13.00 including the tax. I think the food is good, but not $13.00 good. If it came to $9.00 it would be a little more reasonable and make me return. That’s my two cents. I think when all the hype dies down, they will be hard pressed to maintain these prices. It’s the kind of place for the type of people that are willing to waste $5 for a cup of coffee. It’s a shame too because I’m a Mark Mosley fan.
Just ate at the Five Guys west of Portland, OR last Thursday and the tab for two little burgers (each big enough for anyone), small fries (we couldn’t eat them all) and one drink with free refills was $13.96. No sales tax in Oregon. This compares favorably with other top-rated or beloved burger emporiums and in fact is cheaper than most.
I’m sorry..but this place reminds me of that dive, Bobby Flay’s hamburger joint…Way overpriced for an ok burger. At Bobby Flay’s they literally went to costco and used the Martin’s potato rolls threw on a couple of chips and called it a crunch burger for 10 bucks.
